The real-life Ann Messina was not nearly as familiar to the public as Carolyn or the Kennedy family. That presented Zimmer with a different acting challenge. In a June 2026 interview with Awards Radar, Zimmer reflected on the responsibility she felt while portraying Ann. She noted that relatively little was known about her character and that both Carolyn and her sister Lauren were on the plane that crashed in 1999. Her previous roles frequently involved strong women who were direct and commanding. Ann, by comparison, could express concern and vulnerability without losing her strength.
The actress also drew naturally on her own experience as a mother. She said that being the mother of a daughter was a particularly useful emotional connection to the role. Instead of trying to imitate Ann through exaggerated gestures, Zimmer focused on the recognizable feelings that could connect the character to a modern audience.
