Tangled Live-Action Movie First Look, Cast and Release Date Revealed

Date:

New York: Disney has finally given fans their first official look at the upcoming Tangled live-action movie. The reveal took place at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event, where the studio presented first-look footage featuring Teagan Croft as Rapunzel, Milo Manheim as Flynn Rider and Kathryn Hahn as Mother Gothel.

The new adaptation is currently filming in Spain under the direction of Michael Gracey. Unlike Disney+ original movies or streaming series, Tangled is being developed as a theatrical release. Disney has now set its Release Date for March 31, 2028.

The announcement is significant because the project has gone through a long development process, including a period when production was reportedly paused. With filming now underway and the principal cast in place, the remake has moved into a much more concrete stage.

Disney used its D23 presentation to unveil the first official footage from the live-action Tangled movie. Kathryn Hahn appeared at the event and introduced the project, while footage shown to attendees offered an early glimpse of the characters in costume.

The preview reportedly opened with Rapunzel’s long blonde hair spreading across the ground before the camera revealed Teagan Croft in character. Hahn then appeared as Mother Gothel, giving audiences their first official look at the villain’s live-action appearance.

Croft and Manheim were not physically present at the presentation because they were filming in Spain. Instead, the actors joined the event through a video message. Manheim also spoke about the physical preparation involved in playing Flynn Rider, including learning to ride a horse and train for demanding sequences.

The first-look footage is particularly important because most details surrounding the project had previously come from casting announcements and production reports. Disney has now moved beyond those early-stage updates by showing audiences how its three central characters will look on screen.

The Tangled cast currently includes Teagan Croft as Rapunzel, Milo Manheim as Flynn Rider and Kathryn Hahn as Mother Gothel. Croft is known for projects including Titans, while Manheim has built a strong connection with Disney through the Zombies franchise. Hahn, meanwhile, is familiar to Disney audiences through her role as Agatha Harkness in the Marvel series WandaVision and Agatha All Along.

Hahn’s casting became official in March 2026 after Walt Disney Studios shared a social media video featuring the actress in a Mother Gothel-themed shirt. The playful reveal followed earlier reports that she was being considered for the role.

Another notable addition is Diego Luna, who joined the movie in May 2026. His character has not been publicly revealed, so details about his role remain under wraps. Luna’s casting adds another established name to the project, but Disney has not indicated whether his character is based on someone from the animated film or is newly created for the live-action adaptation.

Behind the camera, Michael Gracey is directing the movie, with Jennifer Kaytin Robinson writing the screenplay. Gracey previously directed The Greatest Showman and Better Man, while Robinson is known for writing and directing Do Revenge. Kristin Burr is producing the film.

The new movie is based on Disney’s 2010 animated Tangled, which reimagined the classic Rapunzel story with a musical-comedy adventure centered on Rapunzel and the charming thief Flynn Rider. The animated film featured Mandy Moore as Rapunzel, Zachary Levi as Flynn and Donna Murphy as Mother Gothel.

The live-action version will therefore be stepping into a story that already has a strong fan following. The original film earned more than $600 million worldwide and became one of Disney Animation’s best-known modern fairy-tale movies.

Is Tangled Coming to Disney+?

For now, readers should not confuse the project with a Disney+ streaming release. The newly announced March 31, 2028 Release Date is for theaters.

Disney has not announced a Disney+ streaming date for the live-action movie. That means any specific claim about when Tangled will arrive on Disney+ should currently be treated as speculation unless the studio provides an official streaming announcement.

The same applies to several other details surrounding the movie. While the main cast, director, production status and theatrical date are now established, Disney has not publicly revealed every supporting character or explained how closely the live-action adaptation will follow the animated movie.

The first-look footage also gives only a brief indication of the film’s visual approach. It confirms the recognizable costumes and character designs, but a full trailer has not yet been released.

For fans, the biggest takeaway is that Tangled is no longer simply a long-running Disney remake in development. The movie is actively filming, its central cast has been revealed, and audiences have now seen the first official footage.

The live-action Tangled movie has reached a major milestone with its first official look at D23. Teagan Croft, Milo Manheim and Kathryn Hahn lead the confirmed cast as Rapunzel, Flynn Rider and Mother Gothel, while Diego Luna remains attached in an undisclosed role.

Most importantly, Disney has confirmed that Tangled will arrive in theaters on March 31, 2028. With filming underway in Spain, more footage and casting details are likely to emerge as production continues. For now, fans have their first official glimpse of Rapunzel, Flynn and Mother Gothel — and a confirmed date to mark on the calendar.
